Lloyd D. Newell on Art

“THE INFLUENCE OF ART” by Lloyd D. Newell March 4, 2012

Beautiful art is good for the soul. It can lift and inspire; it can calm and soothe; it can inform and enlighten. Art improves our quality of life and has been shown to stimulate brain function, reduce stress, and help us focus on things that really matter.(1) Those who take time to appreci- ate art—in its many forms—understand its remarkable effects.

Years ago, a man purchased his first home and, with his limited budget, set to the task of furnishing it. But rather than buying a sofa, a nice kitchen table, or other pieces of furniture, he first bought some modest but inspiring artwork. He knew he would eventually need a place to sit in his new home, but he felt he needed art on his walls even more.

When friends and family came to visit, they admired the beautiful prints and paintings that adorned his walls, but they wondered why he did not have much in the way of furniture. He explained that he was working on saving enough money to buy better furniture, but he was afraid that if he did not place a priority on art, he might never be able to justify its purchase.

John Hafen, a noted artist from a hun- dred years ago, explained what this man seemed to know about art. He said: “The influence of art is so powerful in shaping our lives for a higher appreciation of the creations of our God that we cannot afford to neglect an acquaintance with it. We should be as eager for its companionship . . . as we are eager for chairs to sit upon or for food to sustain our lives, for it has as important a mission in shaping our char- acter and in conducing to our happiness as anything that we term necessities. Life is incomplete without it.”(2)

Indeed, art makes life more meaningful. Whether a painting or a poem, a sculpture or a song, wholesome artistic expression lifts us from the everyday and helps us see beyond the here and now.

Master Copy: Final Images

Here are the final, clear images for you to use as reference. Aren't they beautiful? Please work from the blurriest image (a few posts back) through each step toward final resolution. Establishing composition and color generally before you get to specifics.

You should be finished by this coming Monday, March 5th. Please post a photo or scan of your master copy on this blog when you are done. If you haven't received an invitation to be a contributor to the blog, let me know. And let me know if you need high-resolution images of the Master Copy reference. If you want to see which image you are signed up for, click here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AgW8ObhXABJFdHJUSGs4TFBiWkxsbXN6VHBOTmltMWc

We will not hold class on Monday, March 5th, because I will be in California on the field trip all week. You will be painting the full figure from life beginning Wednesday, March 7th. Michael Parker will conduct class as my substitute, with McKinsey taking over at 2:00 as classroom monitor. Please bring your paints that day and a gessoed canvas or wood panel that 18 x 14" or larger. I recommend working about 24 x 18", but 20 x 16" would also work. Let me know if you have any questions.

I will be back on Monday, March 12th, and will hold individual consultations with each of you that week.

If you haven't received an invitation to be a contributor to the blog, let me know. And let me know if you need high-resolution images of the Master Copy reference. Master Copy: Stage #3 Images

Here are the third-stage images, which are less blurry than the first and second stages. Please work from the blurriest images (two posts down) to the second step, before you use these images as reference. It will go faster that way, and you will be more likely to succeed!

I will post the next round on Thursday and the last stage on Saturday this week. You should be finished by Monday, March 5th. Please post a photo of your master copy on this blog when you finish. If you haven't received an invitation to be a contributor to the blog, let me know. And let me know if you want higher-resolution images of the Master Copy reference. On Wednesday, March 7th, you will meet for class even with Mike Parker as my substitute. Please bring your paints that day and a canvas or panel to paint on, which is 18 x 14" or larger. I recommend working about 24 x 18", but 20 x 16 would work too.

Master Copy: Stage #2 Images

Hopefully you've been able to start your Master Copy assignments by now. I am posting the next round of blurred images, a little less blurry than the first ones. Please start with the blurry images in the first post, and then use these to gradually refine the composition. I will post the next set early next week.

The finished copy is due Monday, March 5th. When you're finished, please photograph your work and post it on this blog.

Master Copy Images

The first round of reference images for the Master Copy assignment are deliberately blurred. This is to train you to paint an image starting with general compositional structure (value, color, shape) before getting wrapped up in specific details.

For this assignment, you will work from the blurry reference to paint a master copy. There are three more stages of increasing sharpness between these blurry versions and the actual image. I will upload a new post on the blog with each successively finer-detailed images every two or three days between now and March 5th, when the finished painting is due.

Please choose one of the following six paintings to work from, and sign up for which image you have chosen on this listhttps://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AgW8ObhXABJFdHJUSGs4TFBiWkxsbXN6VHBOTmltMWc

Email me if you would like a higher-resolution copy of the image and if I have one I will send it to you.
